How We Approach a Tile Job
How Tile Installation Works
A tile installation typically follows this sequence:
Estimate & Layout
We measure the space, talk through tile pattern and layout, and provide a free written estimate.
Prep the Substrate
Old tile or damaged surfaces are removed, and the base is leveled and waterproofed where needed before new tile goes down.
Dry-Lay the Pattern
Tile is arranged dry first to confirm spacing, alignment, and cuts around fixtures before anything is set permanently.
Set the Tile
Tile is set with the right adhesive for the substrate and location — floor, wall, or wet area.
Grout & Clean
Once the adhesive cures, joints are grouted and excess is cleaned from the tile face.
Seal & Inspect
Grout is sealed where needed and we walk the finished surface with you before wrapping up.
Our Approach to Tile
Substrate prep is the part of a tile job that determines whether it lasts — an unlevel or improperly waterproofed base is the most common reason tile cracks or grout fails early.
In wet areas like shower surrounds, we use waterproof backer board and appropriate sealants rather than treating it like a standard dry-wall installation.
We dry-lay tile before setting anything permanently so spacing, pattern, and cuts around outlets or fixtures are confirmed while changes are still easy to make.
What Affects Cost & Timeline
Every project is different, so we quote after a walkthrough rather than guessing over the phone. Here's what generally moves the price and schedule:
Total square footage of tile being installed
Tile size and pattern complexity (straight-lay vs. herringbone, diagonal, etc.)
Condition of the existing substrate — some areas need leveling or waterproofing first
Whether old tile needs to be removed first
