How We Approach a Deck Project
How Deck Building & Repair Works
A deck build or refinish generally moves through these steps:
Assess & Estimate
We check the scope — new build or repair — and provide a free written estimate.
Frame or Repair the Structure
For new decks, we frame to code; for repairs, we address loose boards, ledgers, or footings first.
Wash & Prep
Existing decks are pressure washed and sanded to remove built-up dirt, mildew, and old peeling coatings.
Let It Dry
We let the wood dry fully before coating — trapped moisture is the most common reason a deck finish fails early.
Install or Apply Finish
Decking, railings, and stairs are installed, or paint/stain is applied evenly across the surface.
Final Check
We walk the deck with you to confirm the build or coating quality before wrapping up.
Our Approach to Decks
Decks take more abuse than almost any other exterior structure — direct sun, standing water, and foot traffic all shorten a deck's life if the framing or prep is rushed.
For refinishing, we typically recommend a solid or semi-solid finish for decks with heavier wear, since it hides grain imperfections and holds color longer than a thin, transparent stain.
Letting wood dry completely after washing (and before coating) is one of the most important steps — we build that drying window into the schedule rather than rushing to finish in a single visit.
What Affects Cost & Timeline
Every project is different, so we quote after a walkthrough rather than guessing over the phone. Here's what generally moves the price and schedule:
New construction vs. repair or refinish scope
Total deck square footage, including railings and stairs
Current wood condition — splintering, graying, or structural issues need more work
Weather and drying time between washing and coating
Whether the deck is bundled with a broader exterior project

“If I could give Alberto and AMV 100 stars I would! He did my kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room and I can’t say enough good things about him and his employees. Everything was done on time, if not early, and their work is meticulous. If a problem arose, it was solved and fixed before I could even stress about it. Easily the smoothest home improvement process I’ve had, despite it being the largest. Do yourself a favor, and call AMV!”

“We have used AMV for several home improvement projects, including full bath and kitchen remodels. My husband also works in the trades and he is very picky about craftsmanship. Alberto and his team are talented construction experts AND they provide excellent service. If you’re looking for “cheap”, maybe they aren’t your best bet; but if you’re looking for quality work, that lasts, and you don’t have to chase down to get it done, and fair pricing, look no further. Highly recommend!”

“Like several of my neighbors, I used AMV CG to repair and paint the outside of my home last year. They were very responsive, thorough, professional and trustworthy. The cost was fair and they are fully insured. I will continue to use them.”

“AMV Construction completely updated our kitchen for us, put in a large picture window in our dining room and made beautiful custom barn wood shutters for the window to close at night. They also rebuilt the bases on our front porch pillars. They did an excellent job on everything and we definitely would hire them again! :) ”

“I have used AMV construction (Alberto) for many years and always get first-class workmanship and five-star service. AMV has done renovations, painting and other construction work for me. The attached photos show my laundry room full renovation and an awesome barn door in my garage Alberto constructed to hide all my garden equipment. When painting the exterior, Alberto will always find and recommend replacing rotting wood (with PVC which never rots). Many painters I have used in the past simply paint over the rotting boards. Alberto’s team always shows up on time and many of his team have been with him for years. This is an honest, professional, family-run business I would highly recommend. I live in a subdivision of Piper Glen and many of my neighbors also use the AMV Construction team for all our painting or renovation needs.”

We only use Alberto and his company! We have another project they will begin this month. Yes, I am sold on this family owned construction company, the brothers and their sons plus their employees ! ”
