How We Remove a Popcorn Ceiling
How Popcorn Ceiling Removal Works
A popcorn ceiling removal typically follows this sequence:
Estimate & Scope
We assess the ceiling and room, and provide a free written estimate.
Protect the Room
Floors, furniture, and fixtures are fully covered before any scraping begins.
Scrape the Texture
Popcorn texture is wetted and scraped off, with dust and debris contained to the work area.
Repair & Skim-Coat
The ceiling surface is repaired and skim-coated for a smooth, even base.
Prime & Paint
The ceiling is primed and painted once repairs have cured.
Final Cleanup
We do a full cleanup pass and walk the finished ceiling with you before wrapping up.
Our Approach to Ceiling Texture Removal
Older popcorn ceilings can contain asbestos depending on the home's age — we discuss this with you before starting and can recommend testing if the home's age warrants it.
Scraping texture leaves an uneven surface underneath, so skim-coating is a necessary step, not an optional upgrade, for a ceiling that reads as smooth once painted.
Dust containment is one of the most disruptive parts of this project if done poorly — we mask the room fully before scraping so cleanup doesn't turn into a bigger job than the ceiling work itself.
What Affects Cost & Timeline
Every project is different, so we quote after a walkthrough rather than guessing over the phone. Here's what generally moves the price and schedule:
Total ceiling square footage
Ceiling height and access
Condition of the ceiling once texture is removed
Number of light fixtures, vents, or fans to work around
Whether smooth or light-texture refinishing is chosen

“If I could give Alberto and AMV 100 stars I would! He did my kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room and I can’t say enough good things about him and his employees. Everything was done on time, if not early, and their work is meticulous. If a problem arose, it was solved and fixed before I could even stress about it. Easily the smoothest home improvement process I’ve had, despite it being the largest. Do yourself a favor, and call AMV!”

“We have used AMV for several home improvement projects, including full bath and kitchen remodels. My husband also works in the trades and he is very picky about craftsmanship. Alberto and his team are talented construction experts AND they provide excellent service. If you’re looking for “cheap”, maybe they aren’t your best bet; but if you’re looking for quality work, that lasts, and you don’t have to chase down to get it done, and fair pricing, look no further. Highly recommend!”

“Like several of my neighbors, I used AMV CG to repair and paint the outside of my home last year. They were very responsive, thorough, professional and trustworthy. The cost was fair and they are fully insured. I will continue to use them.”

“AMV Construction completely updated our kitchen for us, put in a large picture window in our dining room and made beautiful custom barn wood shutters for the window to close at night. They also rebuilt the bases on our front porch pillars. They did an excellent job on everything and we definitely would hire them again! :) ”

“I have used AMV construction (Alberto) for many years and always get first-class workmanship and five-star service. AMV has done renovations, painting and other construction work for me. The attached photos show my laundry room full renovation and an awesome barn door in my garage Alberto constructed to hide all my garden equipment. When painting the exterior, Alberto will always find and recommend replacing rotting wood (with PVC which never rots). Many painters I have used in the past simply paint over the rotting boards. Alberto’s team always shows up on time and many of his team have been with him for years. This is an honest, professional, family-run business I would highly recommend. I live in a subdivision of Piper Glen and many of my neighbors also use the AMV Construction team for all our painting or renovation needs.”

When we moved to Waxhaw, Alberto and his company remodeled the house extensively- they were right on budget, great work ethics, and wonderful updates to the kitchen, baths, sunroom, and built is an office ! We only use Alberto and his company! We have another project they will begin this month. Yes, I am sold on this family owned construction company, the brothers and their sons plus their employees ! ”
